We are a collective of teachers and student teachers of the Alexander Technique, building community in Portland through workshops, study groups, and shared practice.
Classically, Alexander Technique is a practical method for recognizing and releasing the habitual tension that gets in the way of easeful movement, thought, and presence. Our lineage runs through Marjorie Barstow, Bruce Fertman, and Robyn Avalon — all of whom sought to expand understanding of the technique toward a study of the quality of one's life through the body.
It is taught one-on-one and in groups — through gentle touch and careful attention to oneself. It is a study of our quality of self when we do whatever it is we do.
PDX Alexander Technique is a collective of teachers and student teachers of this work. We host workshops and study groups so the practice can be learned in community, not just alone.
"To me, AT is a study of self intimacy and mutuality. Not abstractly, but practically. Physiology is where it meets the ground, but every other layer comes along for the ride."
"I would call AT an approach, and a discipline, of reverent curiosity. Both deeply private and profoundly relational, it is about the quickening that comes with true contact."
"Alexander palpably gives you agency around shifting the texture of yourself as a relational being in the world. I will probably spend the rest of my days trying to find language to describe these tonal changes that feel like coming home."
"It changed how I teach, how I play music, and honestly, how I listen to people."
"Less a fix, more a way of asking better questions of my own body."
